2009 Pickathon Feedback Survey Vol. 1 By Pickathon . 2009-08-12 . (9) comments
Howdy Folks!
Wanting to make sure we get these thoughts while they are still vivid and semi-fresh, here are our first batch of questions to help generate feedback for 2009 Pickathon. We use this feedback in our yearly planning, and appreciate when folks are able to contribute.
We are always working super hard in hopes of accommodating everyone here at Pickathon in the best possible way, we try to keep the festival fun for all ages, where everyone can be involved. The sky is our limit with future possibilities at Pickathon. With that in mind, there are always things to change and ideas to refine, hang ups and bang ups that occur during the weekend, and areas of the Festival that just need a little improvement to get it just right... We want to hear about it all.
And as many folks out there have expressed in the past...there is also much about Pickathon that is so good that things need not alter from one year to the next. We want to hear about it all.
Here's what you can do...
Either email us at feedback@pickathon.com, or simply post below in the comments....we take it all to heart, so please try to make it well rounded. There you have it, please let us know what you think.
Today we concentrate on the 'Festival' itself...including the following topics:
Camping, Parking, EcoShuttle, Venues/Stages, Sound, Pendarvis Farm (Festival Grounds), Vendors, Staff/Volunteers...and?
1. Any thoughts on Camping? (good areas?, room for improvement?)
2. What do you think about our Parking? (please keep in mind that this will be the area that feels the growth the most in the coming years, and also we are providing FREE shuttles from Portland - in hopes of limiting the overall 'car impact')
3. How about the EcoShuttle? (memories of your ride? ways to help improve this? things that went well with the shuttle?)
4. Anything notable about the Stages and Venues we had this year? (outdoor stages, woods stage, galaxy barn, workshop barn..)
5. What about the Sound and lights and overall atmosphere at those stages? (good or bad?....parts that you enjoyed/appreciated? ideas for improvement?)
6. The Festival Grounds? (Pendarvis Farm.... Our Shade, backdrops, decor?, the Lights at night? The Honey Buckets (was there enough?, clean?, properly placed?), Drinking Water, Hand Washing, Oasis Showers and Sauna, anything else?
7. What about our Vendors this year? (Anyone to applause? Anyone to question? Praises, complaints.....?)
8. Our Staff....our Volunteers? (anyone standout...good or bad?, thoughts or ideas on staffing/volunteers?)
9. Beer Gardens?
10. Anything else related to the 'Festival' that stuck out in your mind?
That does it for today, next we will discuss the Talent, Schedule, MC's, Kids Activities, Pickathon Website, Ticketing, Merchandise, Newsletter, and anything else we can think of.....
You thank you in advance for the good thoughts and ideas for helping make Pickathon the best it can be for all that attend.

It was nice the hillside was terraced this year, definitely helped to have more level ground. Sunday night seemed to have a strange vibe this year, between some of the rather dangerous antics with the golf carts, to the guy who was wondering all thru the campgound screaming (come on it was 3 AM), it was sort of annoying. Lets remember, it's supposed to be family friendly. Sound in the Barn also had some issues, don't know if there was a bad mic or cord, but something wasn't right. Loved the flower art at the woods stage, props to the artist! Lastly, the more food venders the better, we don't bring much to cook, so we rely on the venders.

1. The camping is hard! We managed to snag a space but so many people were wandering around looking for that perfect spot. I don't have any good suggestions as it's all hilly and wooded and that's just the way it goes :) I LOVE the lights that line the paths and help lead you home. 3. Eco-shuttle - probably need a bigger one on Friday when the crowds start coming. We had to leave our 2 friends behind to wait an hour for the next shuttle as we couldn't all fit on the first Friday shuttle. On the way out on Sunday afternoon there was a giant shuttle that was great. 4. Loved the woods stage this year with the flowers. I loved falling asleep to the sounds of folks picking after the official shows ended. 5. Thought the overall atmosphere was great! We loved all the stages, but especially the workshop stage - it was great and cool(ish) this year in the heat and I love being able to get to know the bands a little bit better. 6. Festival grounds are great and seem to be kept up well. If the misters behind the barn are used again it would be great to figure out some way to keep that from being a mud pit. The honey buckets were well maintained again this year. I had told my friends how clean they were and I was glad you kept up the tradition and didn't prove me wrong! 7. Vendors - LOVED the Oasis showers this year! That was great. I agree the lines were pretty long but that's so hard to prepare for (who knew it would be a zillion degrees!). I'm hoping it's cooler next year and we can try to sauna! I particularly loved The Grove & the farm folks that are there to feed us. I couldn't get enough of that watermelon salad with feta cheese! yum! 8. all the staff & volunteers are great. 9. Beer Gardens were great and I loved having Deschutes there this year. The guy in charge of the Deschutes keg-mobile was just awesome. 10. The whole festival is just great.

On Camping: We have a 3 year old we brought. He, and we, had a great time. We camped at the junction of the Coyote Cut-off and the Logging Road. We were w/ one of the vendors and therefore got in early enough to secure that space, which we considered choice. When we got there Friday morning (before the official gates opened) most of the "Family Camping" had already been spoken for. Traveling through that family area early in the a.m. I was thankful we bypassed it. People were gettin' down on their party at 4 a.m. Sunday morning. I am so totally for people getting their party on, but as was said, if you're going to have "Family Camping" noted on the map you should somehow make sure that works for folks who planned for that. A tough one I'm sure with the space you have to offer. That said, I really appreciated the lit trails. Big help for hazy walks back to camp late at night/early in the morning. Another kid observation because it is (happily) my life. Maybe a tiny bit more focus on activities for people w/ the wee ones. The circus stuff was a huge hit. Maybe we missed some of the other activities, I thought it was lacking some. However, the heat did force us to stay in the shaded woods a bunch w/ ours. I'd agree on more showers. The wait was pleasant w/ rugs and pillows, but long. I was very grateful for my one. The mist area you had off the horse stalls became a mud pit quickly. Someone eventually put plywood down. Maybe next year a few wood pallets set down would help. That was a much needed break in that heat. Boy, I don't want to sound like I'm bitchin' because I had such a great time. The positives definitely outweigh the negs for me. Thanks for all the heart and minds that go into making it such a success each year.

2.Parking people needed more training esp for Thursday. They didn;t know the lay of the land and couldn't answer questions without looking for someonein charge. 4. Love the workshop barn. Wish you had more events scheduled here. Esp love the interviews, hearing the back stories of individual musicians and bands as a whole. It made their performances much more meaningful. Wood stage is magical. 5. Lighting the performers was minimal and boring. No backlight, minimal use of varilites, too much white washes across the stage with no saturation for color or mood, however, projections across the back and on canopy were brillant were a great improvement. It was hard to believe the stage could look better but it did. 6. Becauseof the heat more showers instead of sauna could have been available.Cycle Oregon uses a contractor with showers on a trailer and they are very efficient, self contained and low impact. 7. Ice. Please bring in Block ice along with crushed. 8.The entire staff is very pleasant and should be reminded how important that is. We love Pickathon!

The Pick was great this year. I love the Pick for how laid back and non-scenestery it is. Such a relief from your average festivals.I love all the kids running around, hula hooping, etc. However, I do have some comments/request for future Picks. 6. Please please oh please can there be more showers next year??!! A 2-hour wait for one of only two showers when it's 90-something outside and there is dust everywhere is just too long! Granted, the oasis tent with rugs and pillows was lovely and a great place to take a nap while waiting for said shower. And yes, when it was shower time, boy was that an amazing five-minute shower. But two showers for however many people is simply not enough. Is there any chance we could even bump it up to say, five?? Also, we were hoping for misters but found none, other than one attached to a vendor. I understand the level of heat we experienced was unexpected but misters would've made it far more bearable. And perhaps early watering of the grounds would've helped with the dust. 7. The vendors were yummy too. The Grove was delicious and would love to know where it is. However, other than the Grove, it seemed like there wasn't much for breakfast items as we were hoping for some greasy recovery food while waiting for the shower. Ha. I was surprised that Toast didn't have more items, as we've been there and it's pretty yum yum. Oh, but the Acai berry smoothy with banana and hemp seeds was a positive lifesaver! Good call! So yeah, it's getting better and better. Can't wait to see what happens next year. But please, keep some bluegrass around, okay??

1) I'd like to add to the previous comment on Camping.. More specificially to us crazy miscreants that not only wish to witness but want to MAKE music till the wee hours o' the mornin. I am not from the portland area so I really did not know a soul.. and I'm a little shy about crashing peoples self organized music circles uninvited. I hauled my heavy banjo around and eventually parked myself at the (empty) woods stage hours after it had held its last performance of the night (saturday night). luckily I found one other lonely guitar player and we picked around for a while by ourselves... but after not more than 45 minutes discovered all the hay bail sets occupied and more and more people showing up with instruments. I'd say by midnight we had a large and at times boisterous spontaneous open mic (without a mic) jam with loudly cheering audience. One poor sleepy guy came and told us the music was fine but could everyone tone down the cheering and applause? (I confess I lost track of the time.. I think I decided it was time to quit when my fingers started hurting .. and (ahem!) it started getting light out!!!) It made me think it would be great to have a stage or "gathering" place a reasonable distance from sleeping campers where pickers know its ok to pick... I mean it IS a pickaTHON right? I loved the Workshop barn.. where people can listen and ask questions... but I'd like to see more organized encouragement to musically participate. I was amazed at some of the spontaneous talent I witnessed.

1. Any thoughts on Camping? Loved being lulled to sleep by music circles near our camp. 6 year old slept right through everything, but 3 year old couldn’t deal with it. Luckily we live 2 miles away, so bed worked out well for mamma and boy. I felt the “family camping” area so marked on the map was a bit of a joke. No one that I ran into on a gator or at a parking station had any idea what I was talking about. If it is going to be an area on the map, I would like to see it really exist. 2. What do you think about our Parking? Was great for such a difficult area. Would be a mess if it rained. A 2 way bridge to the “overflow” parking area would be nice, especially for pedestrians. 3. How about the EcoShuttle? N/A 4. Anything notable about the Stages and Venues we had this year? Woods Stage was magical. I could have stayed there all day and night for all 3 days. Amazing, intimate performances. DO NOT change it. Hammocks in the trees seeded like a great idea. 5. What about the Sound and lights and overall atmosphere at those stages? There seemed to be a few bright lights shining from the back of the main stage directly into the audience. Didn’t really care for those, otherwise excellent. Lights on the shade structure and projection from behind main stage were awesome. 6. The Festival Grounds? Steve was great. Carried some of our stuff up to our camp in his wheelbarrow. I was never wanting for services. Even water at The Woods stage! Bravo! I was wondering if a calculated amount of irrigation and timely field mowing on the grassy areas would have helped with the dust? 7. What about our Vendors this year? SolPops were great. Pizza and those made to order morning burritos rocked. I would have liked to see a vendor with some “snacky” type foods, maybe geared towards kids. Eating every 2 or 3 hours is necessary on a weekend like that. I think that would be a popular booth. Salami, cheeses, fruit, veggies, dip and crackers, etc. 8. Our Staff....our Volunteers? I didn’t get his name, but there was an excellent cart driver that helped me out a few times while he was running all around. Steve was great; let the kids feed the horses. Also, the woman who led the kids in motion exercise activities in the morning was great. Only 2 kids showed up sat morning and only my daughter and I showed up Sun, but she played musical chairs with us and listened to my daughter babble on for quite a while. Overall every volunteer I ran into was helpful and friendly. Hurrah for Pickathon 09 volunteers! 9. Beer Gardens? N/A 10. Anything else related to the 'Festival' that stuck out in your mind? The small intimate venues were my favorite, especially The Woods Stage and The Workshop barn. I’m sure some people couldn’t get in or didn’t like how cramped it was, but I loved it. Kids activities were good, but could be improved upon with a kid Czar and some more activities. I think a BUNCH of kids are there and they should be celebrated.
