Decompression By Pickathon . 2010-08-11 . (50) comments
It's Wednesday, three days after Pickathon and heads are still in a fuzz from what has been referred to as the best Pickathon ever. For us there is much to process in order to pull together an accurate impression on what to do next. We feel a success all around with room for improvement, which is generally our impression after each Pickathon. The bar was raised and we (you + us) lived up to the expectation.

For today we would just love to hear the stories and have anyone that is interested share memories of this years Pickathon (in the comments below).

Don't bother weighing things down with suggestions or feedback this time around - we'll have that post coming up very soon. Also, the Ultimate Lost and Found post is being prepared with the 2010 version ready to go before the end of the week.

Thanks to everyone once again, your involvement means more to us than words can express. Thank you.

Onward to Lucky #13.....

Pickathon makes me happy to tears. I love going to sleep listening to jamming and waking up to pirates. I love standing in line for amazing local food next to band members who are just one of us. I love living in the woods with friends I haven't met yet. I love the sustainability focus with the water trucks and metal cups. I love introducing new people to the experience that is Pickathon. I LOVE it!

My first of what will be many Pickathons....stupid, stupid stupid good time, and amazing performances. For anybody who had the chance to see Elliott Brood in the barn, are you still singing, too?

ANother fantastic, magical and well organized Pickathon. Best ever? They're all brilliant. Wondering if anyone knows how to get ahold of the two men that made the beautiful mandalas around the trees? Would really like to talk with them. MFP

I realized this year that the most amazing thing about this event are the people. From the musicians and organizers to the volunteers and participants, every single person I've encountered has been kind and thoughtful. Maybe it's because we're all there for the same reason -- to enjoy some great music in a magical environment. Thank you everyone!

So......it was great!! When are the 2011 tickets available??

This was my first Pickathon, and I would believe it if it was the best Pickathon ever. I fell in love with it. I was there to engineer the kboo remote broadcast and didn't plan to do much other than my work, but after the broadcast went off successfully, I returned the equipment and went home to immediately pull enough supplies to camp the rest of the weekend. The entire experience was fantastic, you can't strike a better balance than this. Great adventure and a totally impressive organization with core values that are so very appreciated. Thank you so much, everyone who pulled it off! Blessings.

From the opening harmonic strains of a brief but long awaited Sam and Jill reunion on Friday to the final electric sustain of the Heartless Bastards early Monday morning this Pickathon was the absolute best evah! I tried to decompress by catching Levon at the Woodland Park zoo which worked for a while but my cravings keep bring my head and heart back to this amazing weekend. Old friends, new friends, old music, new music, old memories, and new ones. Did anyone else notice the abundant level of synchronicity? It's gonna be a long year.

Megafaun on the Woods Stage! The third time they jumped off the stage into the crowd they played this sweet tune for a few verses, then dropped a harmonica in my buddy's lap and told him to take the solo. Like any Pickathon crowd, they gave him a huge applause! It was a truly beautiful, and perfectly Pickathon moment.

Is it kid-friendly? Ye gods YES. The place was swarming with great kids; kid-specific shows in the mornings (with great musicians), the circus camp by the barns going for hours (I loved watching Chris Funk wandering through the circus beaming at his daughter and the world in general), no public drunkenness at all that I saw (well, at least until late-night shows in the barn, and then it was happy drunks). I spent Bonney Prince Billy's Woods Stage show in the back (got there late) watching a whole passel of kids entertain themselves running up and down a bank and jumping a ditch in the woods, without bothering anyone in the least and while we could all hear the show perfectly. I kept telling my college-age daughter, "If we were better parents we would have brought you to places like this when you were little." But I don't think there is anywhere like Pickathon...

Is pickathon relatively kid-friendly? We'd like to road trip from Cincinnati but want to be sure. Also please bring back Heartless Bastards! If not I have other suggestions for you! Pls email me if interested!

So thankful to Sherry, Scott, and the entire pre-festival staff and crew whose magnetic synergy flows out onto the land and into our hearts. The memories will last until next Pickathon. We love you!!!

Again, a wonderful and inspiring time was had. Our daughter is 5 but, this was her 6th year at Pickathon! It is a tradition that fills up our souls. So much amazing music, along with shared community and beautiful surroundings. Michael Hurley in the woods, oh my stars what a treat! Too many brilliant moments to share here... Random musicians wandering into our campsite to share songs with us, a stranger helping my child with an owie, the appreciation of musicians while hearing other musicians, the sense of wellbeing, it goes on and on. The stainless cups and the water stations were genius! I am so proud to have been a part of this festival, it does keep getting better. Packing up is always bittersweet. Memories for life! Thank you to all the musicians, Pendarvis Farm, organizers, countless volunteers and all the folks that make this happen!

Two amazing shows by Bonnie Price Billy. He made me laugh and cry. The whole weekend was super! Already looking forward to next year! xxoo

Not knowing who the Cave Singers were and hearing them for the first time on the Woods Stage...unreal.

2010-08-12 11:50:48

Punch Brothers on the Woods Stage cracking jokes about riding gators...an amazing Radiohead cover tune...and Chris Thile's glorious voice floating through the woods. Totally priceless stuff.

I'm 19 years old and came down from Vancouver BC with two of my best friends for Pickathon, mainly to see my favourite band Cotton Jones. I've been to other festivals like Sasquatch and Coachella but Pickathon is one of a kind. It was not a gongshow. Great music, beautiful scenery and wonderful people. Not many places can you sit and relax and read and paint and be so at ease. Thanks Pickathon for being so friendly to people of all ages! Best weekend ever. :)

This was my first year at Pickathon, and I will definitely be back! I agree with a previous post, I can't listen to non-pickathon artists! Its been hard to re-integrate back into everyday life after the most amazing weekend I think i've ever had. Met some fantastic people, and heard more great music then I thought could be squeezed into a weekend. Not to mention the friendly down-to-earth vibe and eco-friendly set up - yay for composting!! volunteering was great too. seriously, how many days until No. 13?

Way to go Pickathon for the best festival around! I don't care who plays, I just know it's going to rock my socks off. This was my fourth year--I'll be coming back for more. And rock on BrewCrew!

2010-08-12 00:24:34

Just sittin hear thinkin' bout those magical, soul-stirring, spine-tingling, tear-jerking, pickathon moments of musical and communal bliss. My owl spotted tin cup runneth over with memories that will be cherished for a long time to come. Yet another stellar Pickathon for the history books!

2010-08-11 23:41:13

Amazing weekend as always! We brought our 3 Month old son and had the greatest time. We were camped near the Woods stage and didn't need to leave all weekend, though of course we did. Frank Fairfield on the woods stage was MIND BLOWING. The Dust Busters ruled the weekend with some jaw dropping late night picking every night. How is it possible that this fest gets better every year. Thanks to all involved for our favorite weekend of the year.

2010-08-11 20:39:33

Elliott Brood!!! They must return. Frank Fairfield and the Dust Bros.picking in car camping saturday night. And hugs from Langhorne Slim... Again, best Pickathon ever!

Fantastic! I didn't want it to end, and even teared up a bit during the Black Lillie's set on Sunday night at the Starlight Stage because it was coming to an end. Thank you so much for the best weekend of the year. I have already put in a time-off request at work for next year.

Hi All! What a wonderful party! So Much Fun! We at Pendarvia are still processing Lost and Found. We will be sending out the catalog of L&F. We will keep it for a year. We will return stuff much sooner if it's something you need. Next year, paw through this year's l&f and find what you lost. I mean, we even have a couple toothbrushes. Whatever is not reclaimed is up for donation on Pickathon Sunday!!!! yers, sherry pendarvis et al.

2010-08-11 19:12:22

Great Pickathon! Yes, a wee bit crowded this year, but not so much that it detracted from a splendid time. Huzzah for Michael Hurley, Little Wings, Frazey Ford, The Deep Dark Woods, Frank Fairfield, Foghorn Stringband, The Cave Singers, and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy! Few were there to see Little Wings at 11:30 on Sunday night, but wow, a great moment indeed when Lee Baggett twice ran offstage for no apparent reason and upon his return was forced to perform a deeply and comically flawed solo version of Neil Young's 'Pocahontas.' If anyone can explain that incident, please share.

My two year old woke this morning and asked me, "Where's my camp, Mama?" We all felt that way, like we'd found a new home. I grew up in Idaho, and don't normally think of crowds and woods existing together at all, let alone in harmony, so I was amazed to feel such a sense of calm and community in all those dirty, dancing legs and smiling faces. I'm listening to Martha Scanlan and tripping on how lucky we all were to share such intimate space with such great musicians. It was our first year, and my heart sings at the thought of more. Thanks. Devon.

2010-08-11 16:08:53

This was our third year but this was the first year the kids complained about leaving! And Eliott Brood in the barn -with the audience banging on cookie sheets - was transcendant. A set for the ages (well, at least until next year).

2010-08-11 15:40:01

I don't want to sound like a broken record, but this Festival just keeps getting better and better. The amount of good music was mind blowing, making it hard to decide who to see. Many thanks to all those who make this possible!

2010-08-11 14:55:51

One of a kind fest. Finding work and reality a bit difficult to readjust to. Can't we just do Pickathon all the time?

this was my third pickathon and definately best - the sustainability aspect was awesome, the music, food choices (yeah pine state), and people make it the absolute best. not to mention the setting - pendarvis farm, so loved, so close, so cherished by us all with woods, meadow, animals, scott and sherry and freckles. zale and wendy did an amazing job. it is always the highlight of my summer and so happy to be raising my son, owen, as part of this - he looks forward to it every year, too!!

The music was incredible this year. I tried to take a nap Saturday, because I'd only had 3 hours of sleep - but the music was so gorgeous, I had to just get right back up! My brain couldn't turn it off, my heart loved it too much!

2010-08-11 14:53:35

I was in a port-a-potty next to Frazey Ford and could hear her singing to herself. Best Pee ever. Seriously, what a transformative experience. Thank you for saving my soul just a little bit...

Oh my god! Such an amazing collection of musicians, kid's area was fantastic, the metal cups rocked (I was on BrewCrew-yeehaw!), old friends, new friends, a festival romance (my first) and a truly sweet gathering of people. Rock-on Pickathon!

2010-08-11 14:39:52

So much fantastic music and memories. My first Pickathon. Won't be my last.

So happy to be a part of this amazing event! Many thanks to Zale and Terry and all who make Pendarvis Farm the most magically amazing place that it is, my cup runneth over! Oh, and I'm also so happy that Fuzzy the pig was returned to Brew Camp to finish out his Pigathon with those who know and love him best!!!

2010-08-11 12:58:18

Every Pickathon is better than the last...already looking forward to next year. Thanks for a truly fabulous weekend!!! I think my ears are still ringing from that Dr. Dog set in the barn.

2010-08-11 12:56:12

One of my favorite experiences was watching "Visually-impaired young man Paxton" on the Woods stage. Not only is his musical ability far beyond his years; his wit, intelligence, and charm shone through. I am definitely purchasing his record. ~JTR~
