Best. Memories. Ever. By Pickathon . 2010-08-18 . (76) comments
It's been 10 days since leaving the farm and the memories are still swirling. From one photo to the next we are consistently reminded of how amazing things were.

Photographer Tim LaBarge has put together another great highlight reel for us to take a trip down memory lane with. For the most part this batch summing up what was experienced by the majority of us, of course not even close to covering it all...but at least enough to get the stories flowing.

For today's conversation we would like to hear about the music:

1. Who was a highlight for you in 2010 (band, stage, day)?

2. Who should return in 2011?

Here's the slideshow, 102 fun-filled memories from 2010 Pickathon. (click, click, click...to view them all)

Little Wings, Deep Dark Woods, Sean Hayes, Richmond F., Cave Singers, BPB (of course), Weinland, Megafaun, Blitzen Trapper, Vetiver, and NO GIANT CAMERA AT THE WOODS STAGE PLEASE!!!

2010-12-13 17:50:17

Paul Jacobsen & The Madison Arm in 2011 would be a perfect fit. The drummer alone will make you smile.

2010-11-18 11:54:47

My dream 2011 Pickathon includes: SEAN HAYES. PUNCH BROTHERS. Breathe Owl Breathe. Frazey Ford.

2010-09-27 14:31:27

Lucero for 2011..please

2010-09-23 19:54:55

We need Lone Madrone (from Portland) next year, along with Langhorne, Sally Ford, Breathe Owl Breath, Red Stick Ramblers, and check out The Quick & Easy Boys! They will fit right in.

2010-09-12 09:50:01

Cave Singers! I watched all of their sets, and each one was amazing, no matter how haggard they were by sunday.

2010-09-09 18:50:35

Roadside Graves! Awesome bring'em back!

Loved The Cave Singers, Punch Brothers, Langhorne, Red Stick Ramblers, and Weinland. Especially loved Martha Scanlan. I fell in love with her in 2006, fell deeper in during 2007, now head over heals in 2010! Also - really enjoyed Photographers "Mustache Song" on the Mtn Stage just before Langhorne. It was truly darling (no other way to describe it)They should definately return. Lastly - please bring back Trampled By Turtles. Thanks for providing such a beutiful happening! Cheers!

2010-09-05 15:53:35

A few more suggestions for 2011: Califone, Devendra Banhart, Damien Jurado, Vashti Bunyan, Micah P. Hinson, and . . . oh yeah! Mark Olson or Victoria Williams! I second the idea of Jason Molina/Magnolia Electric Co.

2010-09-01 15:53:58

natethegreat_590@hotmail.com
What a lineup this year! Can't wait to see who Pickathon's going to have next year. Maybe some more roots performers from other areas of Oregon? How about Eugene's Mark Ross, hobo folksinger and former sideman to Utah Phillips? How about the carefully-crafted lyrics of Low Tide Drifters or Portland's excellent band Fast Rattler? Also, Otis Gibbs would be a perfect fit!

2010-08-31 14:06:54

Of course Langhorne Slim..THe Cave Singers plus I hope the man with the great dance moves from Sunday comes back..Breathe Owl Breathe.. I second the notion for Lucero also The Avett Brothers..And a new one to check out is Mark Growden!!

2010-08-31 12:34:03

ideas for next year: The Donkeys, Drug Rug, Magnolia Electric Co, Drive by Truckers, Akron Family, John Langford, Lucero, The Panderers... I really enjoyed Richmond Fontaine, Red Stick Ramblers, Elliott Brood (barn), Heartless Bastards (3am barn), and always love the Cave Singers. I love the new acts you bring every year!

2010-08-31 03:24:41

I can't get enough of Elliott Brood. The barn with Elliott Brood and Heartless Bastards(with Chatham County Line in between) was a killer time. I was even able to check out Little Wings while I was getting more water. I'd like to see in 2011: Oh Susanna, Deer Tick, Elliott Brood again, and I liked someone's idea of The Sadies with Neko. I dont participate in the hoe down and would rather see a headliner but I know people do like it....this was my fifth Pickathon, and I *think* its my favorite so far, but its close tie with the one with The Gourds and Bad Livers reunion...bring back Shiny Ribs and the Gourds!

Punch Brothers! and Frank Fairfield!

Highlight? (Already posted this in Decompression, but it needs to be said again.) Little Wings at 11:30 on Sunday night, Starlight Stage. A great moment when Lee Baggett twice ran offstage for no apparent reason and upon his return was forced to perform a deeply and comically flawed solo version of Neil Young's 'Pocahontas.' If anyone can explain that incident, please share. As for who should return, certainly Little Wings and the Deep Dark Woods. Michael Hurley should receive an honorary open invitation. The Larry Gillis band from 2009 please. And how about Johnny B. Connolly? Not to mention Samantha Crain. And of course Jolie Holland! Finally, let's get serious guys, you need to bring Richard Buckner, Howe Gelb, Eleni Mandell, and, most critically, Matt Bauer.

2010-08-27 12:12:07

Late jumping in on this, but Langhorne Slim absolutely killed the Woods Stage, and Elliott Brood was super super sweet at the Galaxy Barn--rocked my socks. Please please have them back! On a side note, happened upon Frank Fairfield and The Dust Busters jamming along the path near our camp; one of the greatest things about the pickathon!

This is my family's second Pickathon - after last year we did not hesitate to get tickets for this year even before the lineup was announced. Personally, I preferred this year's lineup to last year's. I loved the Fruit Bats, which is a group I requested after last year, but really dug a bunch of groups I'd never heard before: Cotton Jones, Dust Busters, Elliot Brood, Woody Pines, and loved Heartless Bastards. Also really dug Punch Brothers - their workshop performance was really cool. I regret not hearing Bonnie Prince Billy, who I hear was great, but we had to leave early. I would love to see a lot of these bands back, but would love to see some new ones too - but please bring Foghorn back and continue the Friday night square dance. Aside from the music, thanks for keeping it kid-friendly and featuring some awesome grub. The metal cup switchover worked really well. My only gripe is that even after getting there at noon on Friday, it was still difficult to find a camping spot - seemed like half the camping area was full. Still, it was great and we can't wait for next year!

I really liked the woods stage the most, especially when Breathe Owl Breathe played there. that was perfect to me. I also really enjoyed Dr. Dog and the Deep Dark Woods.

2010-08-25 17:17:51

Highlight: Cave Singers & BPB on the woodstage. Sam & Jill in the workshop. Elliott Brood in the Galaxy barn. I would love to see back: Frank fairfield, woody pines, sam & Jill, Michael Hurley, Chatham County Line, The Cave Singers, Vetiver, HACKENSAW BOYS!,Pokey Lafarge, C.W STONEKING! New act possibilities?: Felice Brothers, Huck Notari, Run on Sentence, O'death, Kitty Daisy & Lewis, Brown Bird and Caleb Klauder

2010-08-25 13:34:21

The music was fabulous, as always. I thoroughly enjoyed newbies Elliot Brood and old favorites like Chatham County line alike. I'd LOVE to see a local favorite included - Casy Neill and the Norway Rats. Plus, more Whiskey Puppy!

2010-08-25 05:36:51

deep dark woods or sallie ford and definitely saturday night in the barn was a fave. SALLIE FORD NEEDS TO BE BACK NEXT YEAR!! and the deep dark woods is just kind of a staple.. yet again another "pickathon is life" kind of weekend.

2010-08-24 23:58:23

Punch Brothers, Cave Singers, Black Lillies, Hayes Carll, Elliott Brood...damn everyone was good really. But please keep the mix alive.

2010-08-24 00:29:06

Pickathon is the highlight of my year. I was sad when it ended, had tears in my eyes during Black Lillies set on the Starlight Stage on Sunday night. It's such a long wait till next year! My favs this year were Black Lillies, Frazey Ford, Elliot Brood, Langhorne Slim, Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside, Dr. Dog, Heartless Bastards, These United States, Seth and May, and Breathe Owl Breathe. I hope to see these bands next year! The square dance was amazing and unforgettable. I LOVED IT! Best moment- catching Micah from Breathe Owl Breathe in my chair, under my blanket after coming back from the water truck!

2010-08-23 13:01:04

Band I'd love to see return: Frank Fairfield, The Cave singers, Dust Busters, Punch Brothers, Woody Pines, Chatham County Line, Megafaun, Breathe Owl Breathe, Michael Hurley, Sam and Jill. New bands (some were there in the past) I'd like to see: Tramped by Turtles, The Felice Brothers, The wooden birds, c.w. stoneking, horsefeathers, Brown Bird, O' Death, Tallest Man on Earth.

2010-08-23 10:57:54

Looking back at the schedule and reading peoples comments I'm reminded of how much great music I missed. I wish I could divide myself into fourths so that I could catch it all. Bands I did see and would like to see again, and again, and again: Punch Brothers, Breathe Owl Breathe and Langhorne Slim. Also, as a parent, I loved the Saturday Morning Cartoon show on the Woods stage and Captain Bogg and Salty. Thank you for making Pickathon so kid friendly. All of the staff and the festival goers made our family feel very welcomed. My kids are already excited for next year.

2010-08-23 10:39:10

Keep the mix of roots, rock, and indie! I think the festival would suffer if it got too boxed in by notions of "genre". I think the mix keeps the days and the crowd fresh and diverse. But this year I absolutely loved Cotton Jones, Cave Singers, Heartless Bastards, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Richmond Fontaine, Dustbusters, The Fruit Bats, Michael Hurley, and Seth and May. The Woods Stage is so special and all the performances were amazing, but PLEASE don't have that giant camera crane there again. It was distracting and took up a lot of space that could have been used for seating. Seeing as how this thing seems to be getting bigger, you're going to need every inch you can get!

2010-08-23 00:50:26

Wonderful as always...a dizzying number of bands! Please bring back the Sadies next year! They could back up Neko Case!

larissa_lp@yahoo.com
We were so happy to see the Fruit Bats on the lineup. I went to my first Pickathon last year and having previously thought it was more of a bluegrass scene (not that there's anything wrong with that...I love bluegrass, I do) I was really happy to find bands like Horsefeathers there. We were plannig to go this year anyway, having had so much fun last year, but were absolutely thrilled to see one of our favorite bands in the lineup. So if possible, bring back the Fruit Bats. The cool thing about Pickathon is that next to the bands we already love are bands we haven't heard of, or haven't actually heard in person. We ended up buying CDs from Heartless Bastards, Elliot Brood, Cotton Jones, and Megafuan, too. And though I didn't buy others' CDs (or haven't yet) I was captivated by the Punch Brothers, Black Prairie, and many others. What I love about Pickathon is hearing nonstop amazing music that I've never heard of. And a good variety of it, too. AND my kids have an amazing time. We all were quite on the ride home, sad that it was over. Thanks for making this happen- you are helping solidify memories we'll all carry with us forever.

2010-08-22 17:55:31

Highlight was most definitely Langhorne Slim!! Drove over 800 miles just to see him and it was so worth it. Frank Fairfield was out of this world, the Dust Busters were awesome, and Megafaun and the Cave Singers on the Woods Stage were memorable : ) Best folk festival I've ever been to (and I've been to many). We will be back next year! Thanks for making our trip so worthwhile!

2010-08-22 03:40:01

DEFINITELY need to bring back both Frank Fairfield and Blind Boy Paxton...and Jill Andrews...and The Dust Busters...and Sam Quinn... AND many others from '09 like Horse Feathers, C.W. Stoneking, Alela Diane and Hackensaw Boys. THAT would make a great lineup!

2010-08-21 12:06:59

both bonnie prince billy shows were great. frank fairfield and little wings on the woods stage were magical. all worth a return. i would love to see bill callahan, akron/family, and timber timbre next festival

2010-08-21 11:48:27

next year: dexter romweber duo and an artist from bloodshot records.

2010-08-21 11:18:37

Who should come back, loved that you had so many great portland bands, esp Sallie Ford and Black Prairie. Loved Typhoon, and the Cave Singers and Sean Hayes. Next year> more deep southern blues or chicago blues acts. Love Dale Watson, hope he can return too. Also love Chatham County Line.

Friday kind of sums things up... easing into Pickathon life in the workshop with Jill Andrews & Sam Quinn was briliant then Langhorne to shut things down some 10 hours later... epic. Was completely blown away by the beauty of Martha Scanlon at the woods stage, the stage presence of Sean Hayes. Loved the energy of the Punch Brothers and wished I could have caught more of the Cave Singers. The Fruit Bats getting their Wharf Rat on was a nice suprise. Pleasanty suprised by the Heartless Bastards and really there were so many special performances. I even commented a week later that waking up to Cap'n Bogg and Salty wasn't so bad as a day at Pickathon is love! The staff was awesome, love my Pickathon cup and want more to complete the set. Mother Nature smiled on us with the weather, was very cool to see how family friendly the event was and if you saw it, how can you not love the pickathon mice running through the fields! I reckon they were trying to get to the Galaxy Barn for the next show! 50 weeks and counting till Pickathon 2011?

2010-08-20 23:16:10

highlight: sean hayes on the woods stage, langhorne on the mountain stage - yowza! suggestions for bands for next year: mountain man (3 woman accapella - amazing http://www.last.fm/music/Mountain+Man), dexter romweber http://ruraltone.com/dex/biography.html, hillstomp outta portland (maybe you've had them before? they would tear a stage up!)

I'm with what Romana Cohen said. That pretty much sums it up for me. There are too many highlights for me to sum em all up. (Well, this'll be my fourth post and comment to attempt that somewhat), tho I must mention that I was pretty surprised to see all the families and kids cuz I'm not used to that at music festivals. But it was delightful and wholesome! Those kids so merrily playing in the dirt every day on the trail to the campsites...instead of playing vid games..that was something! Or the child sleepily saying goodnight to 'everything' (stars, whatever, etc.) reminding me of my child when younger....highlights for me. Anyways, when I think of it now...it almost reminds me of an old, old Star Trek episode. Ya know...including great rides to and from. Like stepping into a portal and going to another 'world'...with dif values, ways, priorities, etc. Then coming back and feeling like it was almost a dream. But it wasn't..it was real! It was sooo nice not to see corporate logos everywhere like most fests I go to!!! And...I gotta say. I wanted to say or give a shoutout to Paste Magazine, but couldn't get anyone to oblige. or whatever. Alot of fave artists, I know of, cuz of that magazine and the samplers they used to give out. Hayes Carl (please have him again next year!), Langhorne Slim and the Heartless Bastards!! Dr. Dog cuz of Sirius radio. One more lil mention to and about the lovely, dear, sweet Mandala guys. (my fave cool cats!) Oh ya. Red from Virgina, too. (I wish life were more like that all the time!)

For me it was Megafaun at the Woods Stage on Saturday, with the impromptu follow-up by the "Photographers" and their lovely little ditty "Mustache". Dr. Dog in the Barn that same night. The Cave Singers, both shows (they need to come back)... I am already chomping at the bit to get back next year and cook more yummy for all those amazing bands and all the hard working folks who make this great event happen.

2010-08-20 12:59:59

Jill Andrews gave me a case of the goosebumps that lasted for 30 minutes; i'm negotiating with the Guinness Record folks as we speak

2010-08-20 12:34:33

All the music was awesome. The Frank Fairfield and Blind Boy Paxton workshop was a standout for me. Watertower Bucket Boys, Mitchel, Chatham County Line, Pine State Biscuits all great. I kept thinking local PDX band The Bellboys would be a very good fit for this event, they are perfect for a barn set.

2010-08-20 10:14:45

Canada ruled this year. Elliot Brood and Deep Dark Woods were the best. Also would like to have Sallie Ford, Langhorne, Sean Hayes and Sam Quinn back again. I miss Trampled By Turtles. And please please please try to get Carolina Chocolate Drops for next year! Portland bands The Builders and the Butchers and Blind Pilot would be fun. And I'll throw in a vote for Jackalope Saints, I have heard them and they would be a great fit.

For next year, you need to invite unknown Portland band Jackelope Saints...

#1 Langhorne on Mountain view stage on Sunday. #2 Seth and May workshop barn on Saturday. #3 Sean Hayes on Mountain view stage. Can't wait till next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i love you pickathon!!!! xoxo.

Why did I just burst into tears while looking at the slideshow? Thoughts: 1. Authenticity. Pickathon breeds it. From the honey buckets to the reusable beer cups, the integrity of the festival shows in each small gesture and adds up to a well-facilitated magic. 2. Passion. From all of those gorgeous shots, one can really see the intensity and devotion of the musicians and of the audience. 3. JOY. The bands that capture my heart are those that bring joy to their work and pour it out into the sunlit woods and dusty fields. Breathe Owl Breathe, Seth and May, etc. Even bands that have an edge of sorrow such as Little Wings move me, here on hallowed stages. 4. More square dancing. It was thrilling, but almost dangerous because of the crowd density. Maybe we need a daytime square dancing with kids? It's a great way for people to connect with new friends. 5. Pickathon is my Christmas. My heart now has a soundtrack for one more year. Thank you, thank you.

2010-08-19 13:55:36

Sally Ford, for sure! Forgot about her. But was volunteering then but still sounded great! Just love her/that band's sound! And Breathe Owl Breathe's set that night was fab, too. (Nice campsites, too.) One more highlight, the yummy and fresh blackberry pie some lovely people shared one morning with me. Also, loved the coffee and big rice bowls, there. Very good!

2010-08-19 13:51:38

Highlights: The Heartless Bastards and Dr. Dog, without a doubt! Elliott Brood (esp. at the lil workshop Sunday morn...that was magic! nothing less than...), Deep Dark Woods, Fruit Bats, Frazey Ford, those amazing cajun players!, Red Stick Ramblers, Hayes Carl, Langhorne Slim, The Roadside Graves (esp. how they ended their sets, playing out in the crowd with everyone singing along, dancing in a circle), sooooo many bands! Everyone was fantastic. I think there was only band that I wasn't so into. Oh ya, how could I forget the fab and adorable and oh so talented T-Model Ford! Now that was a treat! The horses! I loved the horses. The barn, the campfire. The amazingly lovely 'door guys' who were old time musicians and oh so mellow. The wonderful, wonderful sound guy in the barn. Etc. etc. And volunteering and meeting so many musicians and fine, fine people!!! Tremendous. The lady o the land on her horse perusing 'everything'. Micheal, too. My one regret...I missed most of Bonnie Prince Billy's set. Had had nooooo idea what an artiste this man is! Or that band. Why they are so beloved. At least, I caught the last couple of songs and some of his banter!!! Also loved These United States, Typhoon and Megafaun. Oh yes! The cups!!! The (stainless steel) cups were an absolute highlight. Not only helping wash them...well dry and package (which was alot, alot of fun!)...but their whole presence at the fest. Big kudos for that!

2010-08-19 13:39:04

You would? Like to hear feedback?! Thank you. I started journalling right after the fest, but then stopped. Some of my highlights at the time. I am still reeling! It's so hard not to compare 'normal' life (somewhat boring) to that absolutely stupendous experience!!! (Music and mega friendly people!) I savour the memories, daily! Absolutely exquisite! I've had to vow to one friend to stop mentioning it as it was all I could talk and think about for a while. Some people 'got' it..in particualar, and surprisingly my parents and family. So maybe I'm gonna invite them next year. Thank you thank you thank you! Everyone I met, all the people involved and everyone who put it together. Plus, the beautiful, beautiful Pendarvises!

2010-08-19 13:32:56

gurltech@eoni.com
Highlight: Seth and May's set in the Workshop Barn captured my heart. Should Return: Breathe Owl Breathe. Heartless Bastards. Punch Brothers. Sallie Ford. Frank Fairfield- Out of this world (especially his impromptu performance at the gate Saturday afternoon for a group of 5 or so). Foghorn Stringband- square dancing has never been so fun.

2010-08-19 12:01:44

There was so much great music it is hard to decide but Seth and May in the workshop barn was one of my favorites along with all Elliot Brood performances. Breathe Owl Breathe at the woods stage was an amazing experience. Both of Sean Hayes sets were wonderful, he has an amazing voice. I like Langhorne Slim's idea of being the house band.

2010-08-19 10:36:15

I love the mix of musical styles, and I think I'd be less likely to come if the rock and indie elements were phased out. That said, highlights were Bonnie "Prince" Billy on the Woods stage - totally amazing, blew me away. Every Fruit Bats show. Heartless Bastards on the main stage (still kicking myself for missing them on Sunday - I had to work the next day!) Cave Singers in the woods. Cotton Jones is a new favorite for me. It was an amazing weekend!

2010-08-19 00:59:30

Would love to see more "roots" music and less "indy" rock (not to complain as my whole group had one hell of a weekend!). Some favorites were Frank Fairfield, Water Tower Bucket Boys, Black Prairie, Red Stick Ramblers, Deep Dark Woods. Undisputed kings of the weekend for me were The Dust Busters and their endless jamming all night and into the morning all three nights! 355 days till next year....can't wait!

2010-08-18 22:31:45

As a a Megafaun fan, I was stoked/perplexed by the mix of their sets - but the Woods Stage was amazing. Dr Dog was a perfect closer on Friday and Saturday. Bonnie Billy was a beautiful thing...I'm curious how he enjoyed the event. Typhoon, Sallie, Black Prairie.....Roadside Graves!

2010-08-18 21:25:19

Bring back THE BLACK LILLIES! Loved them! Also loved the Red Stick Ramblers and Langhorn...

2010-08-18 20:21:59

Black Lillies- song called Yes I Know. Awesome!!!!!

2010-08-18 20:16:35

I miss the Hackensaw Boys!!!! Next year please! :)

2010-08-18 20:15:03

breathe owl breathe was too pretentious and slow. snorkel gear? is this 3rd grade? good for kids though, but I'm an adult! and there was too much "rock" sound this year for my taste (seemed to be mostly on Saturday). the highlights were: Punch Brothers, Anais Mitchell, Woody Pines, Black Lillies!

2010-08-18 17:25:46

I especially loved the sound of the Cave Singers through the woods in my tent, Town Mountain Saturday morning and The Cairo Gang. But all the music was great.

2010-08-18 14:03:27

1. Martha Scanlan in the Woods. Beautiful set. Punch Bros Mtn View stage. One of the most amazing sets I've ever seen. Black Prairie's set on the stage next to the Mtn View stage (I forgot the name). Having been to all the Pendarvis Farm Pickathons, I'd like to see some new blood, or at least some of the folks that haven't been for a year or two. This was my least favorite lineup of the Pickathons I've attended (but I still had a great time). The stuff I liked the least seems to be the stuff most commenters liked the most - oh well... Congratulations on the jump in numbers - seemed to be near "capacity" for the site.

Still missing this year's Pickathon so bad! Ditto on the Breathe Owl Breathe; after their Wood Stage set, we were among the many hungry buyers who snatched up their LP. Just magical. I love the intersection of indie and roots music, it really makes this festival so special... Little Wings, Chatham County Line, Frank Fairfield, Frazey Ford (what a great surprise), Typhoon (will only get better with age), Fruit Bats... and if B.P. Billy could come back... wow. Also, is the camping about getting to capacity? Thanks for the highlight of our summer!

So many good shows but Langhorne Slim on the main stage Sunday was out of control, I've never seen someone play with such passion. Really felt like he was channeling the spirits of Jimi, Johnny and (hmm) Axl! Elliot Brood in the barn was pretty sweet too and Seth and May Woods Stage show was fantastic. For 2011 I'd be happy as heck if you brought back this year's lineup. But if you can try and get Steppin' In Out here, they would really light it up! Oh and you gotta bring back TBT and Tom Heinl. Thanks for the putting together the best music festival ever!

Breathe Owl Breathe at the woods stage and Elliot Brood in the galaxy barn on sunday night were both Ah-mazing! I hope they can both come back. Not to mention Bonnie "Prince" Billy, of course, fantastic, and should return as well. I guess that's three, but they were all so great its hard to pick favorites. I hadn't really heard Breathe Owl Breathe but was blown away and am an instant fan. I already knew Elliot Brood, but that barn show was the best I've ever seen of them, so much energy. Thanks again Pickathon for the best weekend ever!

Breathe Owl Breathe on the Woods Stage on Sunday! What can beat capes, thumb pianos, and songs about going swimming in swimming holes. This band has captured my heart! I would like to see them come back and I would like to see Anais Mitchell return. She has been one of my favorite songwriters for awhile now.

I sure hope Breathe Owl Breathe is a shoe-in next year. Our whole camp fell in love!

Really there was so much great music it is hard to pick just one but a highlight for me was Woody Pines on both of the stages they played on! Yes, have them back! I really missed having the Hackensaw Boys around this year, they make every party so much more fun! Please bring them back next year!

Hayes Carll on Friday night was fabulous. I'd gotten to Pickathon, gotten set up, and listened to some music, I set out my blanket on the field and laid down and fell asleep after a long week. I woke up to him singing, and haven't been able to stop listening since. And Town Mountain is also definitely worth a return trip.
