Roll Columbia, Roll: Woody Guthrie’s Columbia River Songs
KEXP DJ and author Greg Vandy with special guests Sam Doores (Deslondes), Alynda Lee Segarra (Hurray For The Riff Raff), Jon Moen (Black Prairie, Decemberists), Jon Neufeld (Jack Straw), sing and discuss Guthrie songs.
As a commissioned songwriter for the Portland’s Bonneville Power Administration in 1941, Guthrie wrote 26 songs – including classics like Roll On, Columbia, Hard Travelin’, and Pastures of Plenty extolling the benefits of public power, hydroelectricity, irrigation, and the Grand Coulee Dam.
This special Pickathon tribute to Woody Guthrie on the 75th anniversary of his Columbia River song cycle will feature Doores, Segarra, Moen, and Neufeld who will play these songs with Greg Vandy, author of 26 Songs In 30 Days: Woody Guthrie’s Columbia River Songs & The Planned Promised Land In The Pacific Northwest. In his new book, Vandy reveals the unusual partnership between America’s greatest folk artist and the federal government in a never told before local story of how the first American folk revival of the 1930’s was a response to hard times, and how Guthrie championed a new Social Democracy in Portland during The Great Depression.
Sam Doores has been described as a modern-day Ramblin’ Jack Elliott and is a member of The Deslondes. A songwriter rooted to tradition and a Guthrie disciple (he shares the same birthday!), Sam “finally has a reason to play all the Woody songs I spent a lifetime learning”.
Alynda Lee Segarra is one of the brightest young stars in American music and lead singer and songwriter for Hurray For The Riff Raff. Noted for her willingness to tackle issues of the day, Alynda Lee is fast becoming a spokesperson for a new generation of fans who identify with roots music.
John Moen is a Portland musician who has been a member of iconic bands like The Decembrists and Black Prairie. A multi-instrumentalist, Moen has been an integral part of the Portland music scene and is known, among other things, for having perfect pitch.
Jon Neufeld is an American musician who plays with the bands Black Prairie, Jackstraw, Kung Pao Chickens and, until recently, Dolorean. He also plays with singer- songwriters Martha Scanlan and Garrett Brennan. Neufeld is best known for his versatile guitar playing.
**Neufeld is also the producer of a new Columbia River Songs album project spear-headed by Oregon-born musician Joe Seamons and musician & former BPA employee Bill Murlin – who gathered and published the songs in a songbook three decades ago – to record and release the 1st album to ever include all of the songs.**
