Art Lineup: Pickathon 2024

We are excited to announce our 2024 Art Lineup! Each year at Pickathon, Pendarvis Farm transforms into an art wonderland. Colored-light apparitions and hidden creatures bring the night to life, while festival goers interact with various art installations curated by Director of Art, Jean Margaret Thomas. The visual Art Lineup is a key element that makes Pickathon unique and keeps the community returning for more.

“I’m excited to share one of the most dynamic yet with the community. Each year, our installations offer unique experiences to the community and foster a deeper connection with nature and each other.”

Jean Margaret Thomas, Director of Art

Seeds #3

Artist: Michael Taluc

Seeds #3 is the next expression in a series of large-scale art centered around a geometric exploration that produced shapes reminiscent of large fennel seeds. Fifty 7-foot-tall seeds line through the forest floating in a random walk above the ferns. Swaying and spinning with the breezes, they dance together in a haphazard chorus line of crisp form, their white lines blending yet contrasting with the backdrop of trees. At night they illuminate their path, coordinating in moire’ patterns that play with the eye.

If Rivers Could Sing

If Rivers Could Sing

“If Rivers Could Sing” uses light and sound to convey the journey of a Pacific Northwest river from its headwaters to its outlet in the Pacific Ocean. Visitors will experience a data-derived composition of light and sound as they walk through three “rooms” that abstract the ecology and health of a river over three distinct regions: mountain headwaters, river valleys, and estuarine outlets to the ocean. The structure of the exhibit will consist of three semi-enclosed tunnels composed of undulating shapes, filled with vibrations of sound and light. The exhibit incorporates short compositions of light and sound derived from a year’s worth of environmental data and sound recordings from each region. Region-specific data includes daily high and low tides, salmon migration, snowpack, water temperature, and river flows.

One of the highlights of the 2024 Art Lineup is the Grotto Gallery, where Painting meets Pickathon. Catch local mural artists in the act, step inside the gallery to see their imagery. Stay to chat or find them out in the wild.  This year, artists Quomni, Kaitlyn McKenzie Nelson, Sam Walsh will be painting on large canvases live at the dedicated gallery space or out in the Pickathon site. The Grotto Gallery is located just up from Quail Trail across from the market. It will be a place for festival goers to visit, talk with artists, and view their work in a relaxed, gallery-like environment.

The gallery is a space organically growing into a casual hangout, offering an opportunity to witness the creative process in action. This shaded area in the woods will also serve as a retreat to enjoy nature, art, and community.
