Live Nation’s Corporate Takeover Threatens Portland’s Independent Music Scene: How You Can Take Action
Thursday September 19, 2024
Live Nation's

Portland’s independent music scene is at risk, and we need your help to preserve what makes our city’s culture so unique. Live Nation, a corporate giant that dominates much of the live entertainment industry, is looking to expand its reach into Portland. This would fundamentally alter the character of our beloved local venues and the artists who rely on them.

On September 19, MusicPortland is hosting an Anti-Live Nation Rally, and we’re calling on every fan, artist, and supporter of independent music to join us. Now is the time to show up for the venues that keep Portland’s music culture thriving, like the Showdown Saloon, and stand against the corporate takeover of our local scene.

What’s at Stake?

Portland remains one of the last major cities without a Live Nation-operated venue. Our local music scene thrives because of its independence. Artists, venues, and fans alike benefit from a community-driven approach that focuses on creativity, collaboration, and authenticity. The arrival of Live Nation would change this, prioritizing profit over the values that make Portland’s music scene so special.

Live Nation’s corporate power threatens the diversity of shows, limits opportunities for smaller artists, and ultimately creates a monopoly that’s bad for fans and local businesses. Independent venues are the lifeblood of Portland’s music scene—they offer spaces where new voices can be heard and unique experiences can be shared.

How Can You Take Action?

This is a pivotal moment for Portland’s music community, and we need everyone to come together to preserve our independent venues. Here are some concrete steps you can take to protect the heart of Portland’s music culture:

Support Local Venues: Venues like the Showdown Saloon are essential to keeping Portland’s music scene vibrant. Show your support by attending shows, sharing events with friends, and making sure these spaces continue to thrive.

Donate to MusicPortland’s Legal Defense Fund: MusicPortland is leading the fight to protect our independent venues. Contributing to their Legal Defense Fund ensures they have the resources to keep Portland’s music scene strong and free from corporate takeover.

Join the Anti-Live Nation Rally on September 19: Your voice matters. Show up to the rally and City Council Hearing on September 19 to stand with local venues and speak out against Live Nation’s expansion. The more people who show their support, the stronger our collective voice will be.

Tell Portland City Council to Say NO to Live Nation: Let’s make it clear to our city officials that we want to preserve Portland’s independent music scene. Reach out to the City Council and tell them to stand with local venues, artists, and fans in saying NO to Live Nation.

Why It Matters

MusicPortland, along with independent venues and countless artists, are fighting to keep Portland’s music scene vibrant, diverse, and community-driven. This fight is not just about venues—it’s about maintaining the soul of Portland’s cultural identity. By standing together, we can protect what makes Portland a haven for creativity, collaboration, and unique musical experiences.

As fans, artists, and community members, we all play a role in ensuring that Portland remains a city where independent music can thrive. Show your support, take action, and make your voice heard. Together, we can keep Portland’s music scene independent and strong.

Join us at the Anti-Live Nation Rally on September 19 and let’s show Live Nation that Portland is standing strong for our local music community.
