Beloved Portland chef pairs up with Americana songwriting genius

Chef Jimmy Askren moved to Portland about 20 years ago from the midwest. He found a vibrant food scene and jumped right in. The following years included working in some of the busiest of Portland’s top kitchens. Chefs Vitaly Paley, Ben Bettinger, Scott Ketterman, to name a few, were instrumental in concreting his love for seasonal Pacific Northwest cuisine. The menu at Askren’s Bellwether Bar changes frequently, utilizing produce at its peak freshness. They constantly striving to make fun and exciting food, but also to make sure they keep things approachable for the neighborhood regulars.

Andrew Marlin is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based out of Chapel Hill, NC. He’s known for his captivating songwriting, presented both lyrically with his band Watchhouse (formerly known as Mandolin Orange) and instrumentally under his own name. In 2020, Marlin recorded two dynamic, instrumental albums, Witching Hour and Fable & Fire, which followed up 2018’s Buried in a Cape. He has also produced six albums of original works of American roots music with Watchhouse and regularly contributes instrumental performances to other artists and albums. In his latest project, Marlin, joined by other all-star roots players, form super group Mighty Poplar.
