If Rivers Could Sing

“If Rivers Could Sing” uses light and sound to convey the journey of a Pacific Northwest river from its headwaters to its outlet in the Pacific Ocean. Visitors will experience a data-derived composition of light and sound as they walk through three “rooms” that abstract the ecology and health of a river over three distinct regions: mountain headwaters, river valleys, and estuarine outlets to the ocean. The structure of the exhibit will consist of three semi-enclosed tunnels composed of undulating shapes, filled with vibrations of sound and light. The exhibit incorporates short compositions of light and sound derived from a year’s worth of environmental data and sound recordings from each region. Region specific data includes daily high and low tides, salmon migration, snowpack, water temperature, and river flows.
