Portal Arts Collective – The Carousel Menagerie

A fantastical carousel-shaped shade structure surrounded by six rideable creatures made of metal and found objects can be found in the Paddock Neighborhood. With mirrors, recycled materials, and illuminated details, it’s a resting place, a photo opp, and a surreal memory rolled into one.

The shade structure will be constructed from metal tubing, extending out in a circle to create the image of a carousel. White shade cloth will cover the top to create shade for those below, and art panels around the edge will be made from recycled components to create a carnival style facade. At the center of the structure, we will have acrylic mirror panels so that riders can photograph themselves with Pickathon as the backdrop behind them in the mirror. There will also be benches so visitors can sit under the shade without having to be on a creature.

With this piece, we will create a space for Pickathon goers to rest in the shade and take a moment to sit and appreciate their experience. At night, shifting lights will illuminate the shade cloth and creatures, becoming a beacon in the field.
