Often the meat and potatoes of Pickathon, Bluegrass has been a staple since the beginning. Often i think to myself that there are too many string bands out there, thus limiting the reach of a few of the upstarts destined for greatness (insert Chatham County Line here). Chatham County Line are as good as it gets…and here are a couple reasons why i think so:
1. Songwriting – Dave Wilson has a strong sense with the pen, making their sound original and at the same time keeping to the bluegrass core.
2. Picking – Chandler Holt and and John Teer are the bands strength once it comes to hot licks and the occasional solo.
3. “Not” Nashville – Thanks to keeping it to the Carolinas, CCL has managed to stay original and not fall into the mold of oh so many “products” from the “music center of the world”…nothing against polished Bluegrass….but seeing it again, and again, and again….really gets old and predictable. Of course that’s only my opinion….see for yourself – Let it Rock!
Oh, and for those that still purchase your music new, certainly a good idea would be to get the bands new record “IV” out this week on Yep Roc.
