Floating on the bluff above the Galaxy Barn, Starburst, designed as both shelter and spatial marker within the landscape, forms part of a backstage neighborhood at the southern edge of the Pickathon site. The pavilion is composed of eleven flexible timber modules built from plywood and dimensional lumber, creating a rhythmic field of shade, gathering, and pause beneath the open sky. The overall folded roof form further organizes these modules into a gentle curve that responds to the existing topography and intentionally frames views toward Mt. Hood, anchoring the experience of the structure within its wider regional landscape.
For those who haven’t explored it before: The Bluff is one of Pickathon’s backstage neighborhoods — a shaded hillside perch among towering Douglas Firs, overlooking the Paddock stage and the forest below. It functions as an intimate hillside lounge, and a peaceful threshold into the main camping grounds. Starburst sits within the backstage neighborhood exclusive to Patron Pass holders.
The design draws from a celestial narrative where shifting light, color, and structure evoke the experience of moving through a constellation of spaces. Each module operates as a fragment of a larger whole, together forming an undulating canopy that transitions from daytime refuge to a luminous nighttime environment. Donated furnishings help transform the space into a comfortable backstage retreat for artists, patrons, and festival staff alike.
Embodying Pickathon’s commitment to community impact, Starburst is conceived for a second life from the outset. After its role at Pickathon, the entire structure will be carefully disassembled and reconfigured downstream at The Showdown, where it will become a permanent shaded patio cover, extending its presence beyond the festival as a lasting piece of community infrastructure.
In this way, Starburst bridges festival and future, temporary and permanent, anchoring itself within Pickathon’s evolving constellation while carrying its story forward into a new setting.
