Hidden among the trees beside the Market Neighborhood, curved paths invite you to wander to Cherry Hill behind the performers, lounge on modular seating, or dance beneath the breeze‑cooled canopy. Angled viewpoints respect artist privacy and production flow while keeping you immersed in movement, rhythm, and regeneration—the perfect tribute to Pickathon’s 25th year.
Whether you’re catching a set, drifting in the glow of the LEDs, or slipping over to the neighboring Market for a bite, Cherry Hill is a living organism—temporary, intentional, and unforgettable.
Cherry Hill is Pickathon’s signature experiment in diversion design‑build: every timber, textile, and fixture is chosen for a second life after the festival.
Structure: An undulating lattice of vertical and diagonal Douglas‑fir members follows the hillside, carving out shaded pockets yet keeping 360° sight‑lines so performers and listeners share the same space.
Canopy: Radiating beams form a glowing halo above layers of hand‑dyed burlap strips—up‑cycled coffee sacks steeped in turmeric, beet, and hibiscus that flutter like the rainbow‑trout gills honored in this year’s mascot.
Night magic: Embedded LEDs and angled uplights turn the arches into ribbons of color after dark, making late sets feel otherworldly.
Since 2014, Portland State University Architecture students have designed and raised Cherry Hill as a full‑credit studio, gaining hands‑on experience while proving how imaginative architecture can also be circular:
| After Pickathon | New Purpose |
|---|---|
| Timber beams | Framework for PSU’s ITECK outdoor classroom |
| Burlap canopy | Living walls for moss, vines & wildflowers |
| Lessons learned | Feed future community projects across Portland |
