Mountains of Sound returns to Pickathon's Market neighborhood for its second year as a circular timber pavilion built from 120 radiating frames, inspired by Wizard Island, the volcanic cinder cone at the center of Crater Lake. Designed by award-winning LA architecture studio West of West and structural engineers Holmes, the structure sweeps low at the center and rises at the outer edges to create shade, with benches along both the inner and outer edges inviting visitors to sit, look up through the interlocking frames, and find each other between sets. By day it functions as a shaded retreat and meeting point. After dark the dance floor activates, a DJ performs within the crowd, and sound fills the space from every direction.
The project was conceived from the outset as a future community asset, continuing Pickathon's tradition of repurposing festival structures after the event, with past projects seeing stages transformed into sleeping pods for veterans and lumber donated to local high schools. As Jai Kumaran describes it: "Mountains of Sound is an installation designed to engage all your senses by creating rhythms of light and shadow throughout the day. And as you move through it, the experience moves with you, nothing is static. Every moment inside it is a different way of experiencing the music."
