Sam Quinn could be the Mayor of Pickathon By Pickathon . 2010-06-22 . (9) comments
Seeming like in one way or another Sam Quinn has topped many of our lists over the past few years at Pickathon. He is in some ways a permanent fixture once it comes to the festival... Performing at 2006 and 2008 Pickathon with the everybodyfields, who knows what he did in 2007?, and then returning again in 2009 with his then completely new outfit, the japan ten. Now that I think about it, at some point in 2009 I am almost certain he ended up on a volunteer crew during setup? It's hard to recall, but if you look hard enough in the memory bank I am sure short shorts and big beard will come to the surface at least once or twice.
So it's now 2010 and Sam returns, and this time with a new record The Fake That Sunk A Thousand Ships (May 2010 release with Ramseur Records). The band with him in 2010 we are still unsure about, but we do know that Tom Pryor, Jamie Cook, Josh Oliver, and yes... Jill Andrews will all be around. Who knows what we'll get?

I was purchasing myself a handle of brown liquor at an establisment in Knoxville, TN, bout the time Plague of Dreams was in its prime. Efields had just played Sundown in the City. As I paid up, a curious bearded man popped his head in the door and uttered a simple, "Hey guys." That was it. That was all he needed to do to make our night. We sipped whiskey, played guitar and tried our best to imitate the legend in singing the verses of TVA that we could remember in our stupor. Oh, and one of us threw a table off a balcony, onto a parking garage.

i ran into Sam about 1am last year and got to thank him for playing "aeroplane" earlier that day...didn't expect to hear it without Jill, and i got to tell him that i was busy making sweet love during the number; he thought that was the best damn thing he heard all day! is that ok? should i not have said that? come to think of it, maybe that's a story about me, not sam...

If you go into your 2009 archives there is a blog where we shared best memories of Pickathon's past. There, you will find a story of Sam in 2008, emerging from one of our tents one morning, and if memory serves me well, he paid for breakfast with a lovely verse of Tequila Sunrise. (I have been on a mission to have him repeat it ever since.) Let me know if you need the photos to go with the story. Put my vote down for Sam ... Mayor of Pickathon!
