2009 Pickathon Feedback Survey Vol. 2 By Pickathon . 2009-08-17 . (28) comments
So... lets talk about the music, the real heart and soul of Pickathon.
There is a deep deep well out there that is brimming with talent that we will continue to pull in over the course of the next few years. We work hard each year at bringing the best mix of performers that summer has to offer and feeling that 2009 was our strongest, most eclectic mix of performances to date.. Many of these folks are now on our list of 'memorable', and possibly you too saw the magic while at Pickathon?

Here's what we would be interested in knowing this time around:

1. Who did you like? Anything/Anyone remarkable? What Stage?

2. Anyone new stand-out for you in 2009?

3. Who would you like to see in 2010?

4. Squaredance? Workshops?

5. Sound in the venues, on the stages? outdoor? indoor?

6. Kids Activities? Positives? Improvements?

7. Do you listen to Peacock Radio while on-site?

8. If you had to choose a "Most Memorable Musical Moment", what would it be?

You can either email us at feedback@pickathon.com, or simply post below....we take it all to heart, so please try to make it well rounded. Let us know what you think, as we too are excited to share our highlights...looking forward to 2010!!

A Pickathon highlight.. The Deep Dark Woods while at the Woods Stage in the Deep Dark Woods, a la Tim LaBarge.

Thought John Doe was great, Deep Dark Woods, Wiyos. Also really LOVED Pancake Breakfast! Check out The Band of Heathens for next year's main stage. Just saw them on Austin... Agree with comments about bringing back bands that bare their soles and share their hearts. Saw a few shows this year that seemed tired, low energy and well, a little snooty for Pickathon.

2009-10-20 13:52:17

Any chance of the Felice Brothers next year?

2009-10-20 13:51:33

Dr. Dog, Thao and Hillstomp were far and away my highlights of the year. Keep 'em coming. Ready for 2010.

2009-10-16 11:55:37

Thao was definitely my highlight. Next year I would love to see Freakwater ... Chris Pureka ... Sallie Ford

2009-10-12 14:42:44

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down were simply amazing during both of their performances. Also The Deep Dark Woods on the woods stage was great and then their Galaxy Barn set blew me away; I wish they had closed the barn that night. Other highlights were Justin Townes Earle, Hackenwsaw Boys, Horse Feathers, Alela Diane, Sam Quinn, and Joe Pug. More than anyone else, I'd like to see Sean Hayes back, as well as the Gourds, The Avett Brothers, Trampled by Turtles, Langhorne Slim, Be Good Tanyas, The Cave Singers, The Old Believers and Po Girl. New and local performers I'd love to see: Todd Snider, Corey Harris, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Elliot Brood, Matthew Santos, Josh Ritter, Michael Manning and the Carolina Pump Station, Sneakin' Out, March Fourth, Talkdemonic, and M. Ward. The list could go on forever. Thanks for bringing such a diverse and and amazing line-up each year.

Biggest surprise, and just plain FUN, Breathe Owl Breathe. They engaged the crowd like no other. Frank Fairfield was also amazing. For me however, I really didn't enjoy the headliners for Sat & Sun. Compared to years past, with the likes of the Bad livers, Avett Brothers, The Gourds, all of which seemed to get everyone going, this year seemed a bit flat. Maybe someone with a little broader apeal for next years headliners. Still a great time, despite the heat and dust.

Pickathon this summer was incredible. Thanks for all the hard work that went into making it the best festival of the year. I live in Colorado and there is a great band, Grass it Up, that I think would be a good addition next year. Check out their website, see what you think. See you next summer!

We joined Pickathon on Friday, but had tickets to see the Bowerbirds on Saturday at Mississippi Studios. They were great - but Megafaun blew us away! I could just see them tearing up the Galaxy Barn one late evening next year.

1. Frank Fairfield, C.W.Stoneking, Alvin Youngblood Hart, THE SADIES! (OMG, stopped me dead in my tracks up the hill when they started playing), Love the Workshop Barn, and Woodstage best. 2. truly enjoyed Larry Gillis Band, and Lost Bayou Ramblers. 3. Vieux Farka Toure or Toubab Krewe,or Toumani Diabate. 4. Workshop Barn is great, but when it's packed, it's hard to hear not only the questions, but the answers...not sure how to remedy that.will think on it an let you know. 5.all sound was good save in workshop...Galaxy Barn sounded WAY better than last year! 6. n/a 7. nope, don't listen onsite..but on way to I do. 8. Seeing friends made in years past, and meeting new ones, both musicians and appreciators, AND just being exposed to such great music is what it's all about. THANKS!

I am a 60 yr old festival goer (since the 60's) and one of the most magical musical moments for me was C.W. Stoneking at the Wood Stage. His music and stories were mesmerizing. You could close your eyes and imagine that you were back in the 1920's. This was my first year at "Pickathon" and I'll be back ~ Marie

I second all the suggestions by the guy with the sick kid. I'd also love to see the Fruit Bats. What about Taj Mahal? Please keep Foghorn aboard next year! 2009 was my first year. Truly had a blast!! Looking forward to next year!

2009-08-26 13:43:30

Keep doing what you're doing. I didn't know any of the bands that were gonna play this year and I ended up with 2 new favorites that I can't stop listening to! LOVED LOVED LOVED Town Mountain & the Freight Hoppers. I thought the sound was good throughout. I love the workshop barn as you get a real feel for the performers as people. It's so great to see the performers coming out and watching other bands play. YOu get a sense that they really are enjoying being there and aren't just there to do a job ya know? Great job again this year picking great bands and setting this all up!

2009-08-25 14:53:32

how daring would you be to get Califone to play next year??

2009-08-23 17:48:06

I missed too much of the festival this year due to a very sick child (he recovered, but it took a couple days), so I saw a portion of Friday and then Sunday. I guess I'm in the minority; this year's lineup was a letdown for me after the last few years. I loved Mike Compton-David Grier, the Freighthoppers, Larry Gillis, Frank Fairfield and the like, but the "headliners" did nothing for me. I count on Pickathon to introduce me to bands I haven't heard before, so some misses are to be expected. I think the Horse Flies would be a perfect fit (I'm going to keep asking for this band every damn year!), as would the Carolina Chocolate Drops. I just heard the Primate Fiasco Band, who would be a good addition. Gillian Welch & David Rawlings would be huge. Old Crow Medicine Show would be fun. Abigail Washburn (with or without the Sparrow Quartet). The Bee Eaters are a good possibility. How about the Asylum Street Spankers? I'd also love to see Martha Scanlan return, not to mention Crooked Still, Danny Barnes (in any configuration), and Darol Anger (whose wrist has healed just fine, but I hear he moved away from Pdx). I always listen to Peacock Radio unless I can hear the stage from where I'm camped. LOVE the workshops - I still think you should release a "Naked Pickathon" disc with songs from workshops over the years - some of those are the best moments I've heard. Trackers NW was a great addition this year - my kids loved the activities they did with Trackers. Love Captain Bogg & Salty - maybe Dan Zanes would be a good add.

Idea for the kiddies next year: Daniel Slosberg, who interprets the Metis fiddler that went with Lewis and Clark on the famous expedition. He puts on a great show. Here's his website: http://www.cruzatte.com/

I love love loved The Sadies with and without John Doe!! Loved Thao & TGDSD-ultra cool rockers, loved Joe Pug- cool as a cucumber, Deep Dark Woods- cant get their songs out of my head, even 3 weeks later ... enjoyed Breathe Owl Breathe at Woods and Starlight Stages, Dale Watson!...I missed seeing one of my favs, Elliott Brood this year, but I'm sure they will try again next year, right, right, right?? It did seem like there were a handful of bands that had the same kind of sound, but the diversity in the other bands made up for that... I'd like to see Elliott Brood, Scott H Biram, Cave Singers (again), Calexico(that would be sweet to see them on the big stage on a Sat night!!) bring The Deep Dark Woods back, Captain Bogg should always play on Sunday morning, and Red Stick Ramblers ....that should do it for now! :) I had a great time!

2009-08-20 19:16:29

Highlights: The Wiyos, The Wiyos, The Wiyos, JayMay, Frank Fairfield, and EVERYONE else I saw. I wish I could have been in 5 places at once. Bring Back: I'd love to see Greg Brown again, the Wood Brothers, Po' Girl and the Wilders. What happened to Darrol Anger? I heard he broke his wrist early in the summer. The perils of bicycle-friendly Portland...

2009-08-19 14:16:04

i would really like to see jackie greene on the line up next year;)

2009-08-18 19:53:03

bike powered PA. :) I saw it done at Sunday Parkways in Portland. Out in front of the City Bikes on Ankeny... Seems like the kind of sustainable ideas for opening people's awareness that pickathon embraces.

highlights for me include C.W. stoneking...WOW! Frank Fairfield...the man was something else. Deep Dark Woods in the barn blew me away. Next year how about some Pine Hill Haints...they are from alabama and tour the west coast every august i run a record store down in Arcata, Ca and had them here for an in-store, i think their music and attitude would mesh perfectly with the pick-a-thon. Also please bring back Pokey Lafarge, top notch performer and all round good guy. Keep up the good work everyone!

2009-08-17 17:19:47

I love how the line-up included eclectic types like Thao and the Get Down Stay Down: they were my favorites. Also, bringing in classics like Dale Watson really added something remarkable. I appreciated this diversity in representing local folks, far-away folks, young musicians, older, classic musicians, and even some ethnic diversity with Alvin Youngblood Hart and Thao. Please keep up this diversity, as well as diversity in terms of artisits pushing the parameters of American Roots: exciting nudges and unexpected jolts of musical delight. I also noticed the JOY that most (if not all) of the performers carried. I could tell that they were HAPPY to be there, happy to play, to be a part of this magical scene. And that joyful, unpretentious energy current sets the place on fire! It's unique to Pickathon! Lastly, the Woods Stage is a special place: it's intimate, cozy, SHADY, and lovely. The flower petal mandalas were a delightful surprise of beauty and meditation... thank you. We just may need a Wood Stage II to include the growing fans of Pickathon. Thanks to everyone for the THE highlight of 2009!

1. Stand outs for this year include Wiyos (all sets), Hackensaw Boys (all sets especially in the barn), Deep Dark Woods in the barn, Joe Pug in the Barn and the Freight Hoppers. I feel like Hillstomp exemplified what makes Pickathon so great. Our local boys played their hearts out, helped out other musicians and generally shared in the circle of excitement of the festival. This year for the first time a couple of bands did not seem to share that Pickathon energy. 2. Pickathon should strive to bring back bands that play their hearts out, share in the energy, enjoy seeing other bands and are excited to be at Picathon. . Those that exemplify this have been Chatham County Line, Langhorn Slim, Sean Hayes, Sasparilla, Hillstomp, Deep Dark Woods, Hackensaw Boys, the Wood Brothers and the Avett Brothers. It would be amazing to see Chris Smither, And the Devil Makes Three, March Fourth Marching Band, Infamous String Dusters. The Square Dance was great as usual but as Pickathon grows you're going to need more space for the large crowd. Thank you for all the work that you put into a highlight of each year.

Oh man... keep doing whatever you're doing in choosing the music. I really appreciate the diversity and quality of the music offered. I really dug Thao and The Get Down Stay Down. I only saw their barn performance and was so taken I downloaded her cd from iTunes. She's a hell of a performer. I wished I could have attended more of the workshops. The Lost Bayou Ramblers workshop was great. Nice guys who are committed to continuing the heart and soul of cajun music. Alvin Youngblood Heart was great but I wish he had not been regulated to the side stage. He was also great on the Wood Stage! It seems like the performers are really excited to be there. I like running into them around the farm and being able to share a few words, that's huge. I hope that sort of accessibility continues.
