Saying goodbye to plastic cups and bottles By Pickathon . 2010-07-29 . (38) comments
Well friends, we did it. We're throwing our hands up in the air and waving goodbye to the 25,000+ plastic cups that once found themselves at home in our glorious beer gardens. Plastic no more.
Pickathon has always been run with thoughtful attention to energy generation and consumption, minimizing waste, and a leave-no-trace mentality. This year we have taken a huge step and committed to eliminating all plastic beverage containers, making Pickathon the first music festival in the country to go plastic (bottle and cup) free.
Bottled water in single-use plastic containers will not be sold, or available at the event. In addition, the compostable corn-based cups that were used in the beer gardens in the past will be replaced with reusable stainless steel cups designed and manufactured by Klean Kanteen. Free water will be available in multiple locations and you are encouraged to bring your own bottle or take advantage of the beautiful Pickathon Klean Kanteens that will be available at the merchandise booth.
Here's the scoop on how the cups will work:
16 oz. Klean Kanteen Stainless Steel cups will be the only vessel allowed for use in the Pickathon Beer Gardens. These cups will be purchased for $5 and can be reused throughout the weekend, Widmer beers are on tap and will be $4 a piece for a 16 oz. pour. Cups must enter and exit the Beer Gardens empty. It's that simple.
There will be ample cup rinsing stations to help keep cups clean and within the beer gardens there will be cup racks for folks that want to mark their cups and utilize the honor system for convenient storage. At the Klean Kanteen booth there will be free 'collars' that can slip onto the cup and with the use of a 'd-ring' can be hooked or hung on just about anything.
This is a test for Pickathon and we need everyone on board to help make it happen. If we cannot make it work, who can?
So check it out above, that's the real deal up there... plus our amazing (out of focus) Brew Crew.

Love the new stainless steel cup! Awesome design- great work Pendarvia on bringing this to fruition. Less waste in the landfill is always the best choice. Happy to pay the $4 and have a cup to use all year long :)

I LOVE the Klean kanteen IDEA!!!! thank you SO MUCH! plus we'll all have cool pickathon cups as souveniers and to RE-USE!!!
2010-08-05 09:12:21
Is this the first year that no outside alcohol will be allowed at Pendarvis? Its understandable that you can only buy beer at the beer gardens at the venue, and obviously be 21, but why if you are of legal age and you have paid for the weekend camping can you not have your own beer at your camping area?
2010-08-05 00:49:58
I'm so glad to hear about Pickathon eliminating those awful plastic single serving bottles of water! Hurray for ones own water bottle/coffee mug/beer stein.

wine will be sold by the cup in the beer garden. likely starting sunday, bottles will be sold TO GO ONLY, which means you will not be able to open the bottle on site...you'll have to wait until you get home. we really don't want to confiscate yer commemorative wine...really really really don't want to, so just take that home. Regarding the question about consuming your own alcohol, i shall reiterate that NO OUTSIDE ALCOHOL IS ALLOWED IN PENDARVIA AND IT WILL BE CONFISCATED. we really really really don't want to confiscate alcohol, so do leave that at home. And the classic caveat: we who have to enforce the rules as well as those who have the rules enforced upon them, are all survivors. the only Pickathon is the legal Pickathon, thanks for your understanding. ~Your faithful BrewCrew
2010-08-02 19:45:23
are you able to drink your own alcoholic beverages while at the camp area?
2010-08-02 19:43:05
please comment to this tidbit of info found on the world wide web....."And for the first time, Pendarvis Farm will sell its pinot noir under a Pickathon label." where will you be selling this and where are we able to induldge in this libation? only in the beer gardens?
2010-08-02 13:59:28
Just want to make sure that everyone knows that outside alcohol is not permitted anywhere in Pendarvia. Because law enforcement will be onsite, outside alcohol WILL be confiscated, and repeat offenders risk their Pickathon. Once again, we don't make the rules, and we get no joy out of enforcing them. but the only way to have a Pickathon is to follow the rules. Thanks once again for your understanding ~Your faithful BrewCrew

the main beer garden provides viewing and listening opportunities for the main stages; the galaxy barn beer garden provides listening and viewing opportunities. You will not be able to drink beer at other stages. So, you are correct that beer is only allowed in control areas, but you will not have to choose between beer and music and every stage. hope that helps. And remember, these rules are concocted by the Oregon Liquor Control Commmission, not Pickathon or BrewCrew...we're all victims...I blame society. ~BrewCrew Chief

This is my first Pickathon, and Im not sure if the rules of the beer garden mean you can only have a beer inside these locations, so when you go to a stage to watch a band you cant have a beer with you? If this is true that really sucks!! I really hope I have misunderstood.

X2 on the gluten free beer- prob not, herein lies my problem, my wife cannot drink normal beers, so I don't assume that there will be gluten free beers.......so I see alot of time spent at the camping area. cheaper, more fun, no issues.....I will buy a cup and have a few drinks, but most of my time will be spent with my better half....as it should be.......spodee odee

Anyone know if a gluten-free brew will be available? I realize this is a long-shot...but would be super cool if available.

Shout out to the Brew Crew! Yessssss! You guys keep us happy at a minimum price. That's nice.

Awesome idea. And after attending Lilith Fair this year, where a 16 oz beer was $7-9, minimum, I'm happy to buy beer that's only $4, and buy a cup as well. My question: will wine be sold, and do we use the beer cup?
2010-07-30 20:35:12
awesome idea!! go pickathon!! Sexy beer cups!!

PICKATHON
Great idea on the stickers...that is why we will have special Pickathon designed "Hello My Name Is" stickers and sharpie markers available for anyone who wants to help identify their cups.
2010-07-30 14:07:37
Heres a thought.....bring your favorite stickers (band, beer or otherwise...not sure if there are pickathon stickers)to put on your cup to identify it. I have stickers on all my kleen kanteens. They personalize and in the case of the beer cup, would be extremely helpful to keep track of your cup. I'm putting it on my list right now!

PICKATHON
There are ample FREE water filling stations on site, all marked on the Pickathon Map that you can find in the Info Section. Bring your own Water Bottles for filling. Food you can bring from home but at the same time we encourage folks to check out the Full Vendor Menu and plan ahead - with that it is suggested to bring your own plates, bowls, utensils, etc.. to help limit that waste. Hope that helps.
2010-07-29 18:53:22
I think it is a cool cup! Cant wait!
2010-07-29 17:03:09
should we bring our own personal container to be refilled with water?can we bring in food other than the campground?

Your branded cup will be good for next year's pickathon, and presumably for evermore. Unfortunately, the legalities prevent some of your other very sensible modifications. OLCC requires a standard cup used by all and we have to report the cup being used. This prevents us from using nonstandard patron cups. In other words, this is not a decision based on a concern about consistent pours. We on brewcrew just want everyone to know that we do not make this stuff up, and hope we will be able to remain on the bright side of this innovation. BrewCrew Chief

Just a thought. I think its fantastic that your trying to avoid the use of plastic. My concern with having to purchase this cup and only this cup is that..... Cost of cups are usually the responsibility of the beverage provider. After all how can you offer a product that your consumer can't use? Another issue is cost wise....plastic cups range from 20 cents or so without a lid. $5.00 % 0.20 =25 beers That for us as the consumer to break even on just the cup. Seems excessive. Will this cup be reusable at future pickathons? With the added cost...I'd prefer to be able to bring my own non-glass container. There are numerous ways of being able to pour correct amounts of beer. In all honestly going plastic free is great...It would be cheaper for consumers to be able to bring thier own container and would have less enviromental impact.

I love it! Also, that alcohol is kept within the confines of the beer gardens is a MAJOR plus for our family. We love that people aren't walking around with their cups of beer. Also, we love that we never see people smoking pot. Truly a family friendly event! Expect more families to come every year because of these things! Thank you for the respect.

Regarding those with children wanting to drink, unfortunately the Oregon Legislature defined minors as anyone under 21. While the OLCC has agreed this is unfortunate, neither they nor we on brewcrew have the authority to change this rule. We have seen couples stand on either side of the beer garden fence, each one enjoying a beer and then switching to the outside to hold the child. this is fine as long as neither party attempts to pass the beer over the fence. Because law enforcement is on site to make sure we are in compliance, we have no choice but to enforce the rules as written. We regret the legality, and appreciate your understanding. BrewCrew Chief

Pickathon
The beer gardens have always been over 21 at Pickathon. Our suggestion is to have someone with your party watch your child while you enjoy the beer garden for a spell.

love this! you guys are awesome.
2010-07-29 13:36:53
so if we're coming with a child can we not drink beer? If beer can't leave the beer garden and my child can't enter....what am I to do?
2010-07-29 13:15:02
That'a very cool. Good job.

The Joshua Tree Music Festival went "No Plastic" on the water containers this year and it worked really well. Bring extra containers to load up on water for camp, too!
